A fairly short and fragile ribbon cable connects the trackpad (mounted in the top cover) to the motherboard; it's best to remove it through the top cover first, then remove the cover itself. The connector has a little locking clip (look closely at the edges) that must be gently pushed away, towards the right hand side, to release the cable. It's a smaller version of the same sort of clip on the keyboard connector.
