Unfortunately it's not easy to live entirely without Microsoft's CP/M-contaminated, bastardised VMS clone. Well, arguably it's easier to live without one of these than with it, but I have opted for the latter anyway. This little machine is powerful enough to run XP, but not so powerful that it seems like too much of a waste.
I was going to link to the Windows XP homepage in the operating system part of the little fact file on the right, but it turns out they're shamelessly using that to peddle Vista; even though it still claims in its title and various parts of the page to be the XP home page, clicking its "How to Buy" link takes you to information on buying Vista (as if that's tricky - you can barely leave your home without getting that festering heap shoved down your throat).
This machine's primary purpose is dealing with MS Office documents. OpenOffice.org does open these, but subtle disagreements about interpretation of the file format and geometry of fonts makes this just a little less than perfect. I also use it for Visual Studio 6.0 (occasionally) and use it to test websites with MSIE (but not here).
