Home : About : About RADO : MSIE Not Supported
Microsoft Internet Explorer is not supported at RADO. This page offers a bit of explanation as to what that means, and why it's the case.
Not supported?
I will make some effort to ensure that this site basically works with virtually any browser. However, I will not make any effort to fix cosmetic defects or minor usability issues that you can work around if you are using Internet Explorer (any version). I am always happy to receive feedback from users of other web browsers about even the most minor cosmetic problem, but if you're using MSIE, don't expect me to rush to fix (or eventually fix) any problem that doesn't totally stop you using the site.
Why Not?
Well, basically because every time I build a website, with very few exceptions, I have to write it once for standards-compliant browsers, and then spend nearly the same amount of time again hacking it to death to the point where it won't even validate any more just so it looks right in broken browsers. And by broken browsers, basically I mean MSIE.
Sometimes I open a site I've built with a relatively limited or unusual browser like Lynx and find I need to rephrase some code to make it look better, but that never seems to involve disgusting hacks (no offence to the author of that article) that break validation.
Note that I am aware that I'm being a little hypocritical here - my stylesheet for RADO does include -moz-border-radius and -webkit-border-radius as well as the not-yet-standard border-radius - but there are three key differences with these:
- They are not quirk-exploiting syntax mangling hacks
- I actually like Mozilla and Webkit.
- They don't hurt other browsers
So, what does this mean if I use IE?
Well, firstly, it means ha, ha, you use IE! (Everyone point and laugh). Secondly, it means that while the site should work (and please do feel free to let me know if anything is substantially broken), it might not look all that pretty. If something doesn't look great, bear in mind the broken old crate of a browser you're using.
But ever since version ...
Well, if IE's standards compliance really does improve, maybe some day I'll retract this page.
